Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Primary

Overview

We are looking for a highly experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Primary to join our growing team in either Adelaide Melbourne

. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to delivering constructability-focused designs for high-stakes projects in the Transmission & Distribution (T&D) sector as part of a reputable EPC company

From high-voltage substations (MV/HV/EHV) to renewable energy systems (solar farms, wind farms, BESS) and transmission systems, you will play a pivotal role in shaping Australia’s energy future. Key Responsibilities

Constructability-Focused Electrical Design Leadership

• Deliver practical designs for primary systems encompassing substation layouts, HV equipment selection, busbar configurations, earthing systems, and lightning protection.
• Ensure all designs meet construction and operational requirements while adhering to Australian and international standards (e.g., AS 2067, IEC 60076, AS 62271).
• Mentor and develop junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Project Delivery and Multidisciplinary Integration

• Lead projects through all design stages: Preliminary, Developed, Detailed Design, and Issued for Construction (IFC).
• Coordinate closely with civil, structural, protection & control, and SCADA engineering teams to ensure a cohesive project outcome.

Design Governance and Quality Assurance

• Implement robust design assurance procedures conforming to ISO 9001 standards.
• Chair design reviews, ensuring constructability, safety, and standards compliance.
• Develop and uphold quality benchmarks, mentoring the team to meet or exceed expectations.

Technical Analysis and Validation

• Perform advanced technical studies such as load flow assessments, fault level analysis, insulation coordination, and earthing design validation.
• Optimize designs to deliver cost-effective solutions without compromising safety or performance.

Safety in Design (SiD)

• Lead comprehensive SiD reviews, embedding safety-first principles into all designs.
• Identify and mitigate high-voltage hazards and clearance risks early in the design stage.

Vendor, Procurement, and Construction Support

• Prepare detailed technical specifications and oversee vendor interaction through tender evaluations and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
• Support construction and commissioning phases by addressing technical queries, managing RFI processes, and ensuring as-built documentation accuracy.

Stakeholder Collaboration

• Act as the primary technical interface for clients, NSPs/TNSPs, Owner’s Engineers, and other stakeholders.
• Drive productive technical discussions to align multidisciplinary goals and meet project objectives.

Preferred Candidate Profile

Qualifications & Core Requirements

Mandatory:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with 8–12+ years of experience in primary electrical design.
• Demonstrated ability in delivering large-scale substation and renewable energy infrastructure projects.

Highly Desirable:

• Professional accreditation (CPEng, NER, RPEQ) or eligibility to obtain such credentials.
• Strong familiarity with Australian NSP/TNSP standards, with emphasis on Adelaide and Melbourne jurisdictions.
• Prior experience working within an EPC environment, producing constructability-ready designs.
