Director — Energy M&A Advisory

The Opportunity
A top-tier energy M&A advisory practice is looking for a Director to join one of Australia's most active energy transactions teams. If you're an energy investment banker ready to make a move, this is the same work — origination, execution, client leadership — with a stronger platform, a clear partnership track, and no balance sheet conflicts getting in the way of client outcomes.
The team has advised on some of the largest and most complex energy transactions in Australia over the past 12 months, competing directly against and winning mandates from the major investment banks. The pipeline is strong, the deal team is senior, and the practice is growing.
The Role
You will run transactions. That means leading processes end-to-end — not supporting them — across M&A, capital raising, and divestments in the energy sector. You will work directly with partners who have come from Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Rothschild, Brookfield, and RBC, on mandates spanning renewable energy generation, battery storage, transmission, and energy infrastructure.
Day-to-day this looks like:
- Leading buyside and sellside M&A processes for energy assets, portfolios, and corporate transactions
- Originating and converting mandates — building and owning client relationships with developers, infrastructure funds, utilities, and government
- Driving deal structuring, valuation, and negotiation across equity, debt, and hybrid financing
- Managing due diligence, bid strategy, and transaction documentation
- Developing and mentoring junior team members
The Platform Advantage
This is where the role materially differs from a comparable IB seat: Partnership track.
A genuine path to equity partnership — not a title on an org chart with a distant promise attached.
No balance sheet friction.
Purely advisor-aligned. No internal credit committee, no house position, no conflict between what the bank wants to underwrite and what's right for the client.
Integrated capability.
Direct access to market-leading tax, diligence, strategy, and financing teams within the same firm — a differentiated offering that standalone boutiques and most bank advisory arms cannot replicate.
Deal flow.
The team is executing on landmark energy transactions right now — multiple GW of renewable energy assets transacted in recent months alone. This is not a practice being built; it is operating at the top of the market.
What We're Looking For
- 6–10 years in investment banking, with meaningful energy, infrastructure, or utilities coverage
- Strong execution track record across M&A and/or project finance and capital raising in the energy or infrastructure sector
- Origination instinct — you understand that at Director level, the ability to build relationships and generate mandates matters as much as execution
- Sophisticated financial modelling across DCF, project finance, and portfolio valuation
- Genuine knowledge of energy market fundamentals — project economics, offtake structures, merchant risk, storage, and the regulatory landscape
- Comfortable leading deals and client relationships with real autonomy
Why Now
Australia's energy transition is generating deal activity at a scale not seen before. The team is at the centre of it — advising developers, infrastructure investors, and governments on the transactions that will define the country's energy future. The practice is growing, the mandate pipeline is strong, and the partners hiring into this role are among the most experienced energy transaction advisors in the market.
This search is being conducted on a confidential basis. Expressions of interest including a CV are welcomed from candidates currently in energy investment banking, infrastructure advisory, or project finance roles.
