Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Design Manager - Substations

to lead the development and delivery of high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) substation projects across Australia. This role is pivotal in ensuring the successful planning, coordination, and technical leadership of the design lifecycle, encompassing substation configurations, electrical systems, grounding, protection, and control systems.

This is an exciting opportunity to work on complex infrastructure projects, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to delivering safe, compliant, and innovative solutions in substation design. This role is Sydney-based, offering a generous salary package of $180K-$220K + Super for the right candidate.

Responsibilities

As the Design Manager - Substations, your key responsibilities will include:

• Leading the planning, coordination, and delivery of HV/MV substation designs.
• Ensuring designs are safe, compliant with standards, cost-effective, and constructible.
• Managing interfaces across civil, electrical, protection, and control systems within substations.
• Mentoring and uplifting the capability of engineering teams.
• Applying Australian standards and governing technical quality across projects.
• Identifying design risks and proposing innovative technical solutions.
• Driving continuous improvement and championing innovation in design processes.
• Supporting stakeholder engagement, proposals, and business development activities.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need

• A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Chartered Status (including RPEV, RPEQ, NER & CPEng) or the ability to achieve this within six months of commencing (desirable).
• Extensive experience (10+ years) leading engineering teams in infrastructure or substation projects.
• Ideally, 5+ years of fieldwork experience, supporting hands-on engineering and site collaboration.
• Familiarity with standards such as IEC, IEEE, AS/NZS, and a strong safety-first mindset.
• Experience working with Tier 1 or Tier 2 contractors is highly regarded.

Day-to-Day

In this role, your daily activities will include:

• Coordinating multidisciplinary teams to deliver substation designs.
• Reviewing and approving technical designs to ensure compliance with project objectives and standards.
• Collaborating with engineering, construction, and client teams to manage interfaces and ensure constructible outcomes.
• Providing technical leadership and mentoring to engineering teams.
• Identifying and mitigating design risks while driving innovation.
• Engaging with stakeholders to align design solutions with project goals.
