Principal Power Systems Engineer

The Opportunity

A globally recognised energy solutions provider is seeking a Principal Power Systems Engineer to join its growing team in Sydney.

This organisation is at the forefront of the energy transition, delivering advanced solutions across energy storage, grid integration and hybrid renewable systems

. This is a senior, client-facing role where you will act as a technical authority, leading modelling, grid compliance, and engineering delivery across complex projects in Australia and the wider APAC region.

What You’ll Be Doing

Technical Leadership & Modelling

• Lead the development and validation of dynamic power system models, particularly for inverter-based resources such as BESS
• Perform grid stability, voltage and frequency response studies using tools like PSCAD, PSSE and PowerFactory
• Optimise control systems and model performance to meet grid requirements
• Support the integration of hybrid systems combining solar, wind and storage

Grid Connection & Compliance

• Lead delivery of Generator Performance Standards (GPS) and grid compliance assessments
• Manage and support AEMO connection and registration processes (R0, R1, R2)
• Prepare technical documentation including performance studies, test procedures and validation reports
• Support commissioning, hold point testing and model validation activities
• Ensure alignment with NER requirements and evolving regulatory standards

Client & Project Engagement

• Act as the technical interface with developers, utilities, OEMs and network service providers
• Support tenders, proposals and pre-sales activities with technical input
• Provide end-to-end engineering support across the project lifecycle (feasibility → operation)
• Coordinate across multidisciplinary teams to ensure successful project delivery

Continuous Improvement & Leadership

• Drive improvements in modelling tools, workflows and engineering standards
• Mentor and develop junior engineers and team capability
• Contribute to best practice development and knowledge sharing across the business

What You’ll Be Working On

• Grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS)
• Hybrid renewable energy projects (solar, wind + storage)
• Complex connection challenges involving system strength, stability and control performance
• Projects supporting the transition to a low-carbon, high-renewables grid

About You

Essential:

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems (postgraduate qualifications advantageous)
• Strong experience in power system modelling and grid connections
• Expertise in PSCAD, PSSE and/or DIgSILENT PowerFactory
• Proven experience with GPS development and AEMO connection processes
• In-depth understanding of inverter-based resources and system dynamics
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills

Desirable:

• Experience in BESS commissioning or model validation
• Programming skills (Python, MATLAB or similar)
• Background in consulting, OEM, or utility environments
• Experience leading projects or mentoring engineers
