We are seeking an experienced and driven Engineering Design Manager to lead the successful delivery of complex, multi-disciplinary design projects for high-voltage substations, utility-scale renewable energy developments (including solar, wind, and Battery Energy Storage Systems), and associated infrastructure. This is a senior leadership role that requires a strong technical background, effective leadership skills, and a deep understanding of the Australian energy industry and regulatory environment.
Responsibilities
Project Leadership & Delivery
- Lead end-to-end delivery of engineering design for substations and renewable energy projects.
- Ensure delivery meets scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety expectations.
- Coordinate design efforts across multiple disciplines, including civil, structural, electrical, and SCADA.
- Oversee all project phases, from concept design to issued-for-construction (IFC) documentation.
Stakeholder & Client Engagement
- Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on design-related matters.
- Collaborate with clients, utilities, OEMs, and construction teams to ensure alignment and readiness for delivery.
- Foster positive client relationships through clear communication and professional project execution.
Technical Oversight & Quality Assurance
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to design teams and discipline leads.
- Review and approve key technical deliverables to ensure compliance with Australian standards, grid connection guidelines, and utility requirements.
- Implement and enforce quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) practices throughout the project lifecycle.
Commercial & Contractual Management
- Manage and track project budgets, variations, resourcing, and forecasting.
- Lead commercial reporting, including monthly progress reports, invoicing, and claims.
- Address scope changes and risks effectively, ensuring clear communication with stakeholders.
Team Leadership & Development
- Mentor and support engineers across various disciplines and experience levels.
- Assist in resource planning and recruitment to meet project demands.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Safety, Quality & Environment
- Champion health, safety, environmental, and quality (HSEQ) principles throughout project delivery.
- Ensure compliance with internal procedures, client expectations, and legislative requirements.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in electrical design, with at least 3 years in a senior or design management role.
- Proven track record in delivering large-scale substation and renewable energy design projects in Australia.
- Strong understanding of Australian grid connection processes, utility requirements, and standards.
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, schedules, and multi-disciplinary teams.
Desirable:
- RPEQ / RPEV / CPEng registration (or actively working toward it).
- Experience working with major network service providers such as Powerlink or AusNet.
