Overview

Our client is a leading organisation in the clean energy sector, responsible for developing and delivering major renewable energy projects across the Australian market. Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of upcoming opportunities, they are looking to appoint a Design Manager to provide technical leadership across renewable generation and HV infrastructure developments.

Key Responsibilities

As the Design Manager, you will be an integral part of delivering reliable and innovative renewable energy projects. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with the Origination team to evaluate site constraints and develop conceptual designs that optimize the potential of the site while complying with environmental and technical requirements.
  • Partnering with power system engineers and procurement teams to align the selection of HV electrical infrastructure and key equipment.
  • Managing external consultants to develop concept designs that prioritize high-voltage compliance, reliability, CAPEX, OPEX, system performance, and safety.
  • Ensuring design standards and HV requirements are clearly outlined in procurement contracts and addressing any associated risks.
  • Reviewing and critically evaluating designs produced by external consultants, including HV substation and transmission line designs.
  • Driving the creation of standardized designs to boost efficiency, quality, and cost reduction at the concept stage.
  • Advising on early-stage project activities to minimize risks related to HV grid connection, permitting, and unforeseen execution costs.
  • Leading the design interface with Transmission Network Service Providers (TNSPs) to ensure optimal integration and compliance with HV requirements.
  • Supervising design deliverables from contractors to ensure alignment with the project's concept design intent and regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary design teams for the successful delivery of project objectives, maintaining a focus on HV design aspects.

Key Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate should bring the following qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, with a focus or significant background in high-voltage electrical engineering.
  • Proven track record in the design, development, and delivery of solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and HV electrical infrastructure.
  • Comprehensive understanding of HV system design, including substation layouts, switchgear, transformers, protection systems, and transmission connections.
  • Strong problem-solving and technical skills to critically assess and challenge design choices to ensure compliance with HV standards and the achievement of optimal project outcomes.
  • Experience managing project timelines, coordinating key decisions, and handling multidisciplinary contributions to deliver projects efficiently.
  • Knowledge of industry legislation and compliance requirements, particularly related to HV grid connections and the Electricity Industry.
  • Ability to establish and cultivate strong relationships with stakeholders, including TNSPs, consultants, and contractors.
  • Familiarity with the renewable energy market, including trends, technologies, and stakeholder landscape.
  • Proficiency with relevant software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills to present and justify technical decisions.
  • A solutions-oriented mindset, with a proactive approach to tackling challenges, along with the ability to work independently.

Day-to-Day Tasks

  • Collaborate with teams and external consultants in the development of detailed and optimized project designs, with attention to HV infrastructure.
  • Evaluate and endorse external contractor designs to ensure compliance with HV grid codes, technical standards, and performance benchmarks.
  • Analyze feasibility studies and site assessments, specifically on grid connection planning and HV risk mitigation strategies.
  • Act as the key point of contact with TNSPs to address HV design and grid requirements.
  • Maintain alignment between design, procurement, and construction teams for seamless project progression.
  • Implement standardized HV design methodologies to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Provide regular project updates and engineering insights to management and stakeholders.
