BESS Controls Engineer

As a renewable energy specialist recruitment partner, we’re working with a globally recognised clean energy and energy storage provider delivering utility-scale battery storage and solar solutions across major international markets.

With a strong pipeline of large-scale BESS projects, this organisation is continuing to scale its engineering capability in Australia and is now seeking a Controls Engineer to play a key role in delivering high-performance, grid-supporting storage assets.

The Opportunity

This is a technically advanced role focused on the design, implementation, and commissioning of fast-response BESS plant controls.

You will work across the full lifecycle from design through to commissioning helping deliver control systems capable of responding in real time to grid conditions and dispatch signals. The role also offers exposure to cutting-edge digital tools, cloud platforms, and advanced control strategies.

Key Responsibilities

BESS Controls Design & Delivery

  • Lead the development and implementation of control systems for utility-scale battery storage projects
  • Support the design of fast-response controllers to meet grid and dispatch requirements
  • Draft and contribute to technical specifications and contract exhibits related to BESS controls

Stakeholder & Project Coordination

  • Work closely with utilities, clients, and suppliers to deliver integrated control solutions
  • Manage technical relationships across internal and external stakeholders
  • Ensure alignment between engineering design, project delivery, and client expectations

Testing, Commissioning & Validation

  • Oversee and support testing and commissioning activities for BESS control systems
  • Ensure systems are performing in line with grid requirements and project specifications
  • Contribute to validation and optimisation of control performance

Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Develop and implement new tools, processes, and workflows
  • Collaborate across teams to drive improvements in engineering delivery and system performance
  • Contribute to a culture of innovation and technical excellence

Leadership & Mentorship

  • Mentor junior engineers and support development within the team
  • Provide oversight to ensure deliverables meet quality, budget, and timeline expectations

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years’ experience in control systems engineering, power systems, generation, or renewable energy projects
  • Strong background in BESS or solar integration
  • Experience with control software development and deployment
  • Understanding of power systems, transmission, and grid integration, utility-scale renewable or storage projects
  • Exposure to modelling tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, EMTP, or similar
  • Experience with python or scripting languages, Automated testing frameworks, and time-series or relational databases
  • Familiarity with Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), Git-based development workflows, Linux environments
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Commercial awareness and ability to balance technical and business priorities
  • Proven ability to work in fast-paced, collaborative environments
  • Proactive, solutions-focused mindset with strong problem-solving ability
